about

The Big Meat Combo formed in the summer of 1994 by 4 pizza workers in a prep room of a pizza kitchen on Stockton St. in San Francisco, CA. "The Big Meat Combo” is the name of a slice sold at that pizzeria. Line Cook/Manager, Billy Pearsley (Banjo, lead vocals), cobbled together a germ of idea to start a Bluegrass/Country band with a few coworkers as a means of getting free beer. Counterperson Mike Battaglia would sing co-lead vocals, Line Cook Manager Chewy Marzolo would play and sing bass, Prep Cook Rich Morin would play guitar.
Billy’s deep knowledge of Bluegrass, Folk and Country would form a majority of The Combo’s setlist. the remainder would be Country interpretations of ACDC, Queen, Iron Maiden and Supergrass songs. The idea gelled and amalgamated rather quickly, and soon other talented coworkers wanted free beer too.
After playing a maiden voyage test run for 4 months at Andy Anderson and Petey Pistolero’s Drunk Tank bar, the BMC upped their personnel with the additions of counterperson Ches Smith (drum), Line Cook J.J. Russell (Lap steel.) and outsider ringer, longtime friend Janis Tanaka (vocals/saw/acoustic guitar.) By the early months of 1995 they had also added 4 more cameo rotating musicians: Driver, Niall Fordyce (mandolin) Prep Cook, Steve Gigante (acoustic guitar), banjo man Simon ?, and local harmonica assassin, Jamin Barton. The gigs were regular 3 to 4 shows a month for the following 6 years. This is a recording of their last show at The Attic Bar on 24th St., in San Francisco's Mission District, the year 2000.
